에릭 켈러 Eric Keller

에릭 켈러 (b. 1985) 작가는 시각적 기억을 회화적 허구로 전환하면서도 특정 장소와 대상을 초월한 분위기로 화면을 채운다. 그의 작품은 몽환적인 붓질과 비언어적인 아우라를 띠는 색채, 암시적이고 형체가 모호한 표현 등을 특징으로 하는데, 이러한 회화적 시도를 통해 작가는 재현적 한계를 벗어나 다의적인 의미를 생성하고 보이지 않는 내밀한 세계에 접근하고 있다.

켈러는 독일 작센주의 그리마(Grimma) 출생으로 뉘른베르크 미술 아카데미 (2006-2008), 드레스덴 미술 아카데미 (2008-2014)에서 수학했고, 2016년부터 2018년까지는 라이프치히 미술 아카데미에서 Annette Schröter 교수를 사사하여 마이스터슐러 과정을 밟았다. 작가는 현재 드레스덴과 라이프치히에 거주하며 작업하고 있으며, 그의 작품은 독일 연방공화국 현대미술 컬렉션, 드레스덴 시립 미술관 컬렉션, 드레스덴 국립미술품 컬렉션, 작센 문화재단 등 여러 기관과 개인 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다.

김선근 GJ Kimsunken

김선근 (b. 1985) 작가는 뉴저지를 기반으로 작업하고 있으며, 호주 국립미술학교와 뉴욕 스튜디오 스쿨에서 공부했다. 그는 ‘보편적인 사람의 형상’을 화면 밖에 위치시키고 화면을 비움으로써 그림과 대상을 분리해낸다. 작가는 형상의 외형이 아닌 비가시적인 존재 자체를 고민하고 화면 안의 형상과 화면 밖의 공간이 맺는 관계를 궁리하면서 정적인 빈 화면을 드러내기 시작했다. 말인즉 김선근은 형상을 통해 형상을 극복하고자 하는데, 그에 의하면 이는 자유와 해방, 완성의 감각을 생명으로 하는 ‘초형상성’의 개념으로 번역될 수 있다. 

또한 그는 (회화 작업의 준비 작업인) 단순 젯소칠 외의 다른 표현을 작업에서 배제하고, 무를 통해 현상적 유를 인식하는 동양의 ‘여백’과 ‘有와 無’ 개념을 접함으로써 숙고된 공백감으로부터 비롯되는 ‘화면의 침묵’을 만들어내고 있다. 김선근의 작업은 이처럼 완성된 형태를 발화하지 않는 것이 오히려 무한을 내포할 수 있음을 감지하게 하면서, 관객으로 하여금 화면 밖에서 존재와 비존재를 사색하게 만든다.
